Eye and vision problems are very common in children. Because they are so common, it is important to screen all children for eye and vision problems. If a child does have an eye or vision problem, they usually will not complain about it. Vision screening helps us find these problems in children so we can treat them.

There are many causes of vision problems. Sometimes a child’s eye may turn or cross (strabismus). This problem can make vision bad in one eye. Sometimes just having more farsightedness or astigmatism in one eye can make the child’s vision very bad. If a child goes a long time without treatment, it may not be possible to make vision better. But if we find problems early, we usually can improve the child’s vision.

Children (under age 6) usually have vision screening at their regular health care providers office. Older children usually have vision screening at their schools. There are many ways to check a child’s vision. The easiest way is to ask a child to read the letters on an eye chart. There are also special machines that can find eye or vision problems. There is no one right way to check a child’s vision. The important thing is to make sure all children have vision screening.
